Hyderabad, Feb. 25: The Election Commission will have crores of ‘poll observers’ on the field this time to nab politicians who violate the model code of conduct.
As part of its attempt to ensure free and fair polls, the EC has decided to encourage citizens across the state to act as poll observers.
“Our intention is to make the eight crore citizens in the state poll observers,” said the Chief Electoral Officer, Mr Subba Rao. “People can pass on information regarding code violation from anywhere in the state.”
The EC is setting up a call centre in Hyderabad, to which any citizen can pass on the information regarding code violation by dialing a toll-free number.
Soon after getting the call, EC officials will alert the collector and the SP of the district concerned to check on it.
Mr Subba Rao had a meeting with officials of the information technology department on Wednesday to develop and install software to make the call centre programme a success.
Apart from this, citizen poll observers can also lodge complaints on the special website being launched by the EC.
The EC has decided to bring Telugu version of the model code of conduct and distribute copies to people across the state so that they would know what to look for.
“We are getting published lakhs of Telugu copies of the code of conduct. We will distribute them to the public,” said Mr Subba Rao.
The Election Commission has also decided to appoint 723 ‘official’ poll observers across the state and has asked the police to videograph the campaign.
