Hyderabad, March 19: The Telangana Rashtra Samiti, was formed in 2001 with the sole aim of achieving statehood for Telangana.
But we want to achieve statehood in a democratic manner and without shedding a single drop of blood.
The demand for Telangana is not new. It had existed as a separate state from 1948 until 1956 and was then forcefully merged into Andhra Pradesh by the fascist Congress. The people of Telangana have a glorious and heroic history of fighting for their rights. They are now seeking restoration of the status quo ante that existed prior to 1956.
They are reluctant to continue in the combined state because of the experience of exploitation in the last 53 years. As of now, 36 out of the 42 parties having representation in the 14th Lok Sabha support the cause of separate Telangana.
Prominent leaders who supported the Telangana cause include the late Mr V.P. Singh, Mr Deve Gowda, Mr Sharad Pawar, Ms Mayawati, Mr Ram Vilas Paswan, Mr Ajit Singh, Dr Ramdas of Pattali Makkal Katchi and Mr Mufti Mohammed Sayeed among others.
In the 2004 general elections, we contested the elections in alliance with the Congress with the hope that it will stand by the promise it made to the people of Telangana to form a separate state.
However, after assuming power with their blessings, the Congress once again showed its true fascist face.
The Congress government headed by the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, instead of keeping its promise to bifurcate the state, tried everything to suppress the people’s movement. The UPA government also dilly-dallied on the issue saying that there was no consensus.
But the movement spearheaded by the TRS stood the test of time. This time we are contesting as part of the Grand Alliance led by the Telugu Desam, which has taken a decision to support the formation of Telangana.
We are confident of forming the government in AP and also playing a key role in the formation of the government at the Centre to achieve the goal of separate Telangana.
