MRPS plans to do a BSP

March. 12: The decision of Madiga Reservation Porata Samiti to offer a share in its pie of seats in Mahakutami to other castes is seen as a “strategic move” by the MRPS president, Mr Manda Krishna Madiga, to build the party on the lines of the Bahujan Samaj Party in Uttar Pradesh.
Analysts say that Mr Krishna Madiga wants to use the Mahakutami as a gateway to lay foundation for converting the Madiga movement into a major political force.
The MRPS, which is spearheading the agitation for categorisation of Scheduled Castes, wants to contest 30 Assembly and four Lok Sabha seats, but it remains to be seen if the Grand Alliance led by the Telugu Desam agrees to this.
“We intend to allot seven Assembly seats to other castes who stood by us during our 15-year agitation. We want to express our gratitude to those who helped us by sending one member each from an upper caste, BCs, STs and Muslims, two from most backward classes and one from physically-challenged groups,” Mr Krishna Madiga said.
The MRPS argues that Malas, another Scheduled Caste, were cornering the benefits of reservations despite having a smaller population. With around 70 lakh people, Madigas are numerically the biggest group in the 1.23 crore Dalit population in the state.
