Hyderabad, March 14: The Praja Rajyam is desperately in need of candidates who have the “winning” mix of bank balance and political experience. The party faces a strange challenge. While the seasoned politicians who want PR tickets do not have enough money to meet election expenditures, the cash-rich aspirants are mostly lacking in political wisdom and experience.
For instance, in Addanki, the PR leadership is said to have zeroed in on Mr B. Hanumantha Rao who quit the TD. But, the PR is now reconsidering the decision as there are doubts about Mr Rao’s financial capabilities.
Meanwhile, the party’s district convenor, Mr P. Anand, the owner of Anand Granites Exports (P) Ltd, is being considered for the Ongole Lok Sabha seat. Though his financial status is exemplary, he has no political background to take on seasoned politicians from the Congress and the TD. Barring north Andhra, where Chiranjeevi enjoys considerable clout, in every other area the party faces this peculiar problem.
The PR is now hoping the “turncoats” from the Mahakutami and the Congress will bail it out. That is why the PR leadership is postponing the announcement of its first list.
It is learnt that to overcome the cash crunch, the PR leadership is planning to field “rich” candidates from the LS segments, who can in turn bear the cash burden of the Assembly candidates.
“For instance, Mr Bhuma Nagi Reddy, Mr T. Chandrasekhar and Mr Ch. Sunil, who will contest from Nandyal, Guntur and Kakinada LS seats respectively, will have to look after the poll expenses of the Assembly candidates in their segments,” said a source.
Meanwhile, the PR plans to hold a public meeting at Parade Grounds in Secunderabad on March 21.
