Poll plan hits candidates

March 13: The state government’s decision to postpone the exams for various posts due to elections has come as a shock to nearly 25 lakh candidates. The exams would be conducted only after the new government takes over in May.

The notifications for Group-I, II and IV recruitment by the Andhra Pradesh Public Service Commission and the mega-district selection committee (DSC) teacher recruitment exam to appoint over 54,000 teacher posts had evoked huge response from unemployed graduates and employees working in the private or public sectors.

Several employees who are on leave for three-six months and the unemployed ones moved to the city to attend coaching classes. The postponement and the uncertainty have upset their plans and many want to return to their native places. Candidates are sceptical on the timing of the conduct of exams in the near future and they foresee a fluid political situation after the polls.

This has impacted new coaching centres that mushroomed in major cities since November 2008 to cater to the demand. The centres did brisk business in the past six months, but have plunged into a financial crisis as the candidates are asking for a refund of fee. Some coaching centres have been closed as the candidates are not willing to join till the uncertainty is cleared. The centres charge Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000 per person depending on the duration.

“The coaching class industry remained unfazed by the recession but the boom was short-lived with the postponement of exams,” said Mr R. Sambasiva Rao, who runs a coaching centre in Ashoknagar. “Lakhs rushed to centres as the government undertook massive recruitment after four years. Moreover, relaxation in the upper age limit by five more years has made several candidates eligible. Candidates want to rejoin only after the exam dates are announced,” said Mr Krishna Kumar of a coaching centre in Ameerpet.
