March 15: The Telugu Desam president, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, may hasten the entry of his son Mr Lokesh Naidu, into active politics. The immediate incentive is the party’s instant acceptance of film actor Junior NTR, Mr Lokesh Naidu’s cousin and NTR family scion, as its next generation leader after three days of a highly appreciated campaign.
Mr Naidu on Sunday gave a clear indication that Mr Lokesh Naidu would play a role in party affairs. “He (Mr Lokesh Naidu) will be hel-ping the party whe-never it requires his services,” the TD president said.
He said it was Mr Lokesh Naidu who was instrumental in the party announcing the Cash Transfer Scheme, which envisages giving money ranging from Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000 to poor families.
Mr Naidu, interestingly, asked the media not to drag his son into politics. Party leaders see in the announc-ement an attempt to project his son’s ability to think up innovative sch-emes “It is such a coincidence that the traits of N.T. Rama Rao and Mr Chandrababu Naidu are reflected in Junior NTR and Lokesh,” a senior TD leader said.
The party leaders have no second thoughts over Mr Lokesh Naidu, who is also the son-in-law of film actor Balakrishna, being preferred by the family over Junior NTR.
Going by his high-voltage performance in the ongoing campaign, party leaders have come to the conclusion that Junior NTR had inherited the legacy of the party founder while attracting the people.
“He is a charismatic figure, has great oratory skills and has mastered the trick of making people to respond to his speeches, like his grandfather,” said a veteran party leader.
The young actor, the son of Harikrishna, bears an uncanny resemblance to NTR. Party leaders close to Mr Naidu see no immediate threat in Junior NTR, who, they argue, cannot afford to sacrifice his film career and pursue politics. “Our leader knows well how to handle people after the elections,” a leader said.
