Malini (Adilabad)
March 19: “Why should we give our votes to any political leader in the coming elections when all of them have failed to provide us drinking water all these years?” asks Ms Surpam Sundaribai of Malini gram panchayat in Sirpur (T) Assembly constituency. Ms Sundaribai is the first voter in the state.
During the Assembly delimitation process in Andhra Pradesh, Sirpur (T), which was then 246th in the Assembly constituencies list, has been numbered No.1, and Ms Surpam Sundaribai’s name is listed first in the voter’s list of this constituency — making her the first voter in whole of AP.
Surpam Sundaribai, now 65, complains that she can hardly collect one litre of drinking water from a nearby borewell, even after running the motor for 20 minutes.
Others in her village collect drinking water from streams in jungles and bring it in drums on bullock carts.
Malini has been plagued with low water-levels for sometime now. Wells and borewells have dried up. The questions that politicians will face when they come here to seek votes will be regarding plans for potable water.
Most of the people here talk angrily about the political leaders’ apathy towards their problem.
People say the sitting MLA has not visited their village for the past five years after his election.
