Latecomers find no place in list

Hyderabad

March 18: Not everyone who applies for enrolment after March 15 will be able to cast a vote in this general election. It will take time for verification of applications and there is a likelihood of many persons not finding their names in the voters’ list in time for the polls.
However, officials in the election wing of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation said those who had applied till March 15 will surely find their names on the voters’ list.
Employees of GHMC and the other government departments are busy with various election related duties and so many latecomers are likely to miss the bus. However, enrolment of voters will be on till April 2.
“Some who applied at the eleventh hour stand the risk of missing their names but this should not discourage people from enrolling, as their names would be added to the voters’ list after the polls,” said the district election officer, Mr M.T. Krishna Babu. “It is a continuous process.”
There are also complaints that employees at some post offices in the city are turning away applicants stating that they are under instructions not to accept fresh applications until pending applications are dealt with.
The AP Postal Circle director (business development), Ms Radhika Chakravarthy, said stringent action will be taken against postal department staff indulging in such tactics.
Thousands of people who registered electronically on the CEC website are also yet to find their names in the voters’ list.
Officials assured that the names of all those who have properly registered online will be added to the voter’s list shortly.
Issuing of electoral photo identity cards through e-Seva centres has also been badly hit by the strike of some employees. Though the strike was called off, several centres are not functioning properly.
