Candidates wait for good omen

Hyderabad

March 23: Congress candidates in Nellore are unable to start their campaigns as the inauspicious period of Sukra mudami days started on Monday.
Majority of the politicians in the district are very particular about propitious days; some even don’t go out during rahukalam and yamagandam.
Sukra mudhami will continue till April 2, and it is not advisable to perform marriages and house warming ceremonies during this period, astrologers say. Though Sukra mudhami’s effects on election campaigns are unknown, most politicians refrain from activities lest something bad may happen, Mr Y. Karthikeya Sarma, an astrologer, said.
However, some leaders plan to start campaigning after the new moon, Amavasya, on Wednesday. Mr Sarma attributed this to people’s fears about launching new ventures before the new moon.
The Union minister of state for health and family welfare, Ms Panabaka Lakshmi, who was given Bapatla Lok Sabha constituency instead of Nellore, has decided to go to Bapatla only after Ugadi following her astrologers’ advice, her aides said.
However, the Surveypalli legislator, Mr Adala Prabhakar Reddy, started campaigning five days ago after performing a puja at Venkaiah Swamy temple in Golagamudi after the Congress high command assured him that he is to retain his sitting seat.
“I started meeting people at Golagamdui after the priests told me that it is all right if I begin campaigning from any holy place,” Mr Prabhakar Reddy said.
