He also promised free colour TV sets for the poor, a sop which helped the DMK to come to power in 2004 in Tamil Nadu.
Under the cash transfer scheme, which Mr Naidu has adopted from Brazil, the poorest of the poor households will get Rs 2,000 per month, poor households Rs 1,500 and eligible middle class households Rs 1,000. The free TV scheme will cover 1.20 crore poor families.
Together, the poll freebies announced by Mr Naidu on Thursday would incur an expense of Rs 50,000 crore per year though the state’s annual revenue is just Rs 71,000 crore.
