NTP-PR to hold talks on merger

By J.R.PRASAD
Hyderabad, Feb. 25: The Nava Telangana Party (NTP) is all set to merge with Chiranjeevi’s Praja Rajyam on Thursday.
The NTP president, Mr T. Devender Goud, and senior party leader Mr E. Peddi Reddy will meet the Praja Rajyam president, Chiranjeevi, on Thursday to prepare modalities for the merger. A joint statement is expected after the talks.
Mr Goud wants Chiranjeevi to come out with an open statement supporting the separate Telangana state as a pre-condition for the merger.
Sources in the party said Chiranjeevi mooted the idea of the merger and asked the NTP leaders to discuss the issue with the party leaders and cadre.
The NTP launched by Mr Goud and Mr E. Peddi Reddy will be the second political party in the state in recent times to merge with a bigger party.
The Talli Telangana launched by Vijayashanti had merged with the Telangana Rashtra Samiti.
Mr Goud convened a meeting of party leaders and cadre on Wednesday and discussed the merger issue. He explained that taking on the Congress and the Mahakutami was not easy.
“We have to take on two strong parties. Merger is the only option to challenge these two parties,” he said.
However, some party leaders reportedly opposed the merger.
“The Telangana issue will be diluted with the merger of the party. We have requested Mr Goud not to accept the PR proposal,” an NTP leader said.
Mr Peddi Reddy later said majority of party leaders and workers favoured merger of the party.
“Political solution is the only way to achieve separate Telangana, ” the senior leader added.
