Patently funny tug of war

By J.R.PRASAD
Hyderabad, Feb. 24: After competing with each other for the status of “Andhra Obama”, the Telugu Desam chief, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, and the Praja Rajyam supremo, Chiranjeevi, are now caught in a hot contest on who has the patent for “social justice”.
Though the social justice slogan has been in the air for decades, both the parties are talking as if they invented it. Chiranjeevi, for instance, said on Tuesday that he was the one who brought up the slogan. The TD and the Congress were just imitating him, said the actor-turned politician.
He ridiculed Mr Naidu’s claims and said it was only after he took up social justice as his slogan that the TD chief made a promise to give 100 seats to backward classes in the Assembly polls. “Is it not the victory of Praja Rajyam?” he questioned.
Meanwhile, the TD politburo member, Mr Nagam Janardhana Reddy, lashed out at Chiranjeevi and said his party had the “rightful patent” of the social justice slogan.
“The TD abolished the patel and patwari system and introduced the Rs 2-a-kg rice scheme,” he said. “We also transferred powers to weaker sections by introducing reservations in local bodies. How can Chiranjeevi deny all this?”
