Hyderabad, April 4: Language plays a crucial role in elections. This is particularly true in the case of candidates contesting in Hyderabad and neighbouring Ranga Reddy districts. They have been forced to come out with publicity material in Urdu, Telugu and English as the constituency profiles have changed along with a growth in literacy.
The Telugu Desam Jubilee Hills Assembly candidate, Mr Mohd. Saleem, who is contesting for the first time, is adopting the three-language formula to reach out to the maximum number of voters.
“Jubilee Hills is a new constituency where Muslims comprise 90,000 out of the total 2.47 lakh voters. I decided to reach out to all sections through the three languages. More than publicity material, my selfless services in the Wakf Board will ensure my victory,” Mr Saleem said.
Apart from assuring to implement what his leader, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu announced, he has also promised to pay the water and electricity bills of each household.
Similarly, the Telugu Desam Hyderabad Lok Sabha nominee, Mr Zahid Ali Khan, has come out with publicity material in Urdu and Telugu since his constituency has both Muslims and Hindus.
In his Urdu pamphlet, Mr Khan’s theme is Hum Tabdili Chahate Hain (We seek a change).
Non-Telugus have become hot property in the Malkajgiri Lok Sabha seat. Political parties are wooing people from North India, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Kerala who have settled in areas like Secunderabad Cantonment Board, Kapra, Malkajgiri, Sainikpuri and other areas.
As many as 7.5 lakh voters out of the 21 lakh electorate in Malkajgiri constituency are non-Telugus. “This constituency resembles a mini India with its cosmopolitan culture. That is why we have printed pamphlets in English, Hindi, Tamil and Malayalam so that they can understand our party policies better way,” said Mr T. Devender Goud, Praja Rajyam Lok Sabha candidate from the seat.
