Hyderabad, April 15: Shadow teams will keep vigil on the movements of certain contestants and top leaders of political parties to ensure that they don’t violate the law and the election code of conduct.
As there has been no major pre-poll violence, the police fears that the first phase of the polling day will pass off peacefully.
The police said one-third of the 36,000 polling booths that will be used in the first phase are sensitive. Most of the Maoist-hit areas along the Chattisgarh and Orissa border are going to polls in the first phase.
The additional DG (law and order) Mr A.K. Khan said, “Shadow teams were put up to follow candidates against whom we have suspicion. This time a lot of videography is being done. Helicopter services are being used in border areas.”
A senior police official said, “When compared with the last elections, there have been no major incidents this time before the polls. Three helicopters are being used while two are in reserve. To avert any attacks by the Naxals, we have taken all measures.”
The shadow teams comprise police and poll officials. Senior officers, including additional DGs, are in the districts to supervise the law and order situation.
