‘TD opened accounts for voters’

Hyderabad, April 15: The election authorities will consider on Thursday the allegations that the Telugu Desam was opening bank accounts for electors to convince them of its cash transfer scheme and get their votes.

The Chief Electoral Officer, Dr I.V. Subba Rao, told mediapersons on Wednesday that he was also examining the audio tapes containing the alleged discussions between the TD chief, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, and his party leaders, in which he has asked them to spend money lavishly.

Apparently to promote the cash transfer scheme, the TD has put up an application form in its official website www.telugudesam.org, for opening bank accounts. It has sought details of booth number and voter number besides name, address and details of the family. It also has a column which indicates the bank name and branch.

“It is obviously an inducement of voters,” said an advocate, Mr C. Damodar Reddy, who has complained to the CEO. “What is the need to seek details of voter number and booth number in the application form?”

According to the petitioner, the TD’s application form also sought details on the number of children, their education, possession of own house and the like.

The Praja Rajyam also alleged that the TD leaders in Guntur district had opened bank accounts through a non governmental organisation and had given passbooks to voters. “The TD leaders have been telling them that Rs 2,000 will be deposited in their accounts on May 1,” said the Praja Rajyam leader, Mr P. Upendra.
