Chiranjeevi goes soft on Congress

Nellore, April 17: The Praja Rajyam chief, Chiranjeevi, has suddenly toned down his criticism of the Congress and has trained his guns on the Telugu Desam supremo, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu and his cash transfer scheme.

The TD was the main target of his attacks during public meetings at various places in Prakasam and PSR Nellore district on Friday, whereas he used to attack both the parties with the same intensity earlier. This change of tact has triggered speculation that the Praja Rajyam has a secret agreement with the Congress.

In a meeting at Kavali on Friday night, Chiranjeevi ridiculed the cash transfer scheme as impractical and also termed Mr Naidu as the root cause for corruption in the state. “His scheme would cost Rs 36,000 crore per annum and how can he meet other needs of the state?” asked the megastar-turned-politician.

He predicted a severe drubbing for the TD as in 2004 and said he could not understand why the Left parties had joined forced with the TD.

Though he also criticised the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, by saying people were not with him anymore, it was mild when compared with the barrage against Mr Naidu.

In Kurnool, he told mediapersons that there won’t be a hung assembly in the state since voters had cleverly cast their ballots for a single party. “The Praja Rajyam will get about 75 to 80 Assembly and eight to 10 Lok Sabha seats in the first phase,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Kurnool additional judicial first class magistrate, Ms L. Tejovathi, on Friday issued non-bailable arrest warrants against Chiranjeevi for conducting a road show near Nandyal.
