Reports reveal that many new and benami accounts have been created by candidates to transfer money to their constituencies. The amounts mostly deposited are up to Rs 49,000 as bank officials do not ask account holders to reveal permanent account numbers for amounts less than Rs 50,000. Sources said a candidate from Warangal (West) Assembly constituency pays his supporter in this manner.
In some cases, candidates are asking businessmen to pay the formers’ supporters and collect the money with interest after the elections.
Meanwhile, with the first phase of the elections set to begin in three days, many candidates are promising voters everything.
For instance, TD candidate from Jubilee Hills Assembly constituency, Mr Muhammad Saleem, has promised to conduct marriages of 1,000 poor girls from all communities if voters send him to the Assembly. Though the promise to marry off poor girls does not feature in the TD manifesto, Mr Saleem said he will bear the expenses of the marriages even if TD does not come to power. The promise will be carried out in five years, he said.
