Phase II: Focus on faction-ridden areas

Hyderabad, April 17: After the violence-free first phase of polls on Thursday, the state police is now concentrating on the faction-ridden villages in Rayalaseema and Palnadu area in Guntur district. These areas are going to polls on April 23 in the second phase.

Police officials began cordon-and-search operations in “highly sensitive” areas in Anantapur, Kurnool and Kadapa districts and in Guntur and Prakasham districts to weed out the anti social elements.

For the second phase of elections, around 58,000 police personnel are being deployed for the security arrangements of 30,427 polling stations in 20 parliamentary and as many as 140 Assembly constituencies in the state.

Around 85 companies of the Central Paramilitary Forces and Andhra Pradesh Special Police are also on duty.

The police formed around 2,971 mobile parties, 766 striking forces and 305 special striking forces for poll duty.

A senior police official at the State Police Headquarters said, “We are working on the lapses of the first phase of polls to see that incidents like Ieeja in Mahbubnagar district is not repeated in the second phase. We are also re-drawing our strategy to see that even minor clashes are averted.”

Police has arrested several persons involved in making of crude bombs and seized illegal fire arms. “We want to see that there is no bomb hurling in Rayalaseema. Most of the notorious persons accused in previous cases are bound over and Non Bailable Warrants have been issued,” said an official.

A drive was also launched to seize liquor stocked in the villages in these areas.
