Hyderabad, April 14: The Congress and the Telugu Desam are training guns on select rivals of the opposite camp who proved to be a ‘menace’ in the last five years.
The Congress is making an all-out effort to defeat the Nagarkurnool MLA and TD deputy leader, Mr Nagam Janardana Reddy, the Ponnuru MLA, Mr D. Narendra, and the Uravakonda MLA, Mr P. Kesav.
Meanwhile, the TD has let loose all its forces to trounce the Congress chief whip, Mr N. Kirankumar Reddy, the transport minister, Mr Kanna Laxminarayana, and the Ungutur MLA, Mr Vatti Vasanth Kumar.
Mr Janardan Reddy is facing toughest fight in Nagarkurnool as the Congress does not want him in the next Assembly.
He had created problems to the ruling party on issues like Ellampally and Obulapuram mines and the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, and the finance minister, Mr K. Rosaiah, have remarked more than once that he should not get elected.
“The mining lobby of the Congress wants to defeat me at any cost, but people are with me,” said Mr Nagam Janardana Reddy.
Mr Narendra is also fighting to win his seat. The Congress fielded Mr Marupudi Leeladhar Rao belonging to his community to divide the caste votes and the Praja Rajyam targeted the BC vote by fielding Mr T.V. Yadav. “The Congress and PR have an understanding here,” said Mr Narendra.
The TD has a problem with Mr Kirankumar Reddy, who had cornered the party chief, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, during several Assembly debates.
Similarly, it is trying hard to outsmart Mr Kanna Laxminarayana and Mr Vasanth. While Mr Vasanth is able to take on the TD, Mr Laxminarayana is finding the going difficult with a strong candidate, Mr Ch Ramesh, being pitted against him in Guntur-2 constituency.
