Visakhapatnam, April 12: Actor Nandamuri Balakrishna said that his sister and Union minister, the Congress candidate for the Visakhapatnam Lok Sabha seat, Ms D. Purandareswari, should have contested as an Independent candidate rather than joining the Congress against which their father, the late N.T. Rama Rao, had fought tooth and nail and founded the Telugu Desam (TD).
Addressing election meetings at different parts of the city here on Sunday, Mr Balakrisna said after joining the Congress, she should have not taken the name of their father to garner votes for the party.
“She cannot compare Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy with N.T. Rama Rao and had she contested the election as an independent candidate, I would have supported her,” he said.
Addressing meetings at Arilova under Visakhapatnam East constituency and MVP Colony, Mr Balakrishna said that NTR never earned a rupee as long as he was in politics and launched several welfare schemes for the poor.
On the other hand, Dr Rajasekhar Reddy earned crores of rupees and had indul-ged in large-scale corruption. He reintroduced the Rs 2-a kg-rice scheme but increased the prices of vegetables which are not within the reach of people, he said.
In the name of Jalayagnam, Dr Rajasekhar Reddy had looted public money and Congress leaders had grabbed 28,000 acres of government land during the last five years, Mr Balakrishna alleged.
Hitting at the Praja Rajyam (PR), he said that the actor-founder claimed that the party was formed to bring about change but had failed to clarify the change.
They had been taking leaders from other parties but never gave an opportunity to people for whom they said the party was formed.
