People throng wine shops

Hyderabad, April 13: As the EC has imposed a three-day ban on sale of liquor due to the first phase of polls on April 16, people on Monday rushed to liquor stores to stock up on supplies. The EC ban comes in force from 6 pm on Tuesday.

The Andhra Pradesh Beverages Corporation Limited received orders for nearly 2.5 lakh cases of liquor and one lakh cases of beer in just a day.

Normally, the corporation receives orders for one lakh cases of liquor and about 60,000 cases of beer per day. As the ban goes on till the morning of April 17, liquor dealers do not want to run out of stocks.

Initially, the corporation expected two-fold rise in sales during election period. However, the spirit sales dampened with the EC’s directive to close all belt shops.

The Andhra Pradesh Beverages Corporation Limited sold 11.5 lakh cases of liquor and nearly 70 lakh cases of beer until Saturday this month. The average monthly sales stand at 32 lakh cases.
