Hyderabad, April 12: As many as 112 out of the 1,833 candidates contesting in 154 Assembly constituencies that go to polls in the first phase on April 16, have criminal cases pending against them.

The National Election Watch (NEW) obtained details about 1,116 candidates only under the RTC Act, the list of which was released at a press conference on Sunday.

Mr Akbaruddin Owaisi, the Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen candidate contesting from the Chandrayangutta Assembly Constituency, tops the list of candidates with criminal background with five cases against him.

Mr Chengala Venkatarao of the Telugu Desam from Payakaraopet (SC), the independent candidate, Mr T. Nagi Reddy, from Gajuwaka, both from Visakhapatnam district and Mr Kolaka Laxmana Murthy, who is contesting on a CPI(M) ticket from Kurupam (ST) in Vizianagaram district, come next with four cases against each of them.

The PR has 13 candidates with criminal record out of its 85 candidates who are contesting in the first phase.

NEW members said the affidavits submitted by the candidates were a mere formality where more than 250 candidates have not specified their educational qualifications. Nearly 50 per cent of the affidavits were found to be incomplete, they said.

It was difficult to collect information about Yakutpura and Charminar constituencies they said. Party wise contestant-with-criminal-charges count:

Congress: 9 out of 96
PR: 13 out of 85
BJP: 14 out of 89
