Hyderabad, March 22: The rise of contractors and businessmen marks the Congress list for next month’s Lok Sabha and Assembly elections.
Most prominent among them are Mr Mekapati Rajamohan Reddy who has been nominated for the Nellore Lok Sabha seat, and Mr Komatireddy Rajagopal Reddy of Susi-Hitech who will contest from the Bhongir Lok Sabha seat.
Mr Rajamohan Reddy’s KMC Constructions is a reputed construction company, Susi-Hitech is going national with its tie-up with the engineering giant Jayaprakash Associates.
Mr Lagadapati Rajagopal who was renominated for the Vijayawada LS seat. His Lanco Group has interests in power, construction and real estate sectors. Officially Lanco’s business is managed by his brother, Mr Rajagopal is said to be confined to policy making.
Mr Kavuri Sambasiva Rao, who got the Congress ticket for the Eluru Lok Sabha seat, is in the construction business for more than 30 years. His Progressive Constructions has completed many prestigious projects both in the state and outside.
Mr Rayapati Sambasiva Rao, a tobacco baron in Guntur district, has moved into engineering. His company is building the first phase of the Outer Ring Road around Hyderabad city. Mr Sambasiva Rao will be contesting from the Guntur Lok Sabha seat.
The Visaka Industries managing director, Mr G. Vivek, has been given the Peddapalli Lok Sabha ticket after his father, Mr G. Venkataswami, retired in his favour.
Among others, the group also bankrolled the cricket stadium at Uppal in Hyderabad.
The Congress is fielding the Nandi Pipes owner, Mr S.P.Y. Reddy, from the Nandyal Lok Sabha constituency, once held by the former prime minister, P.V. Narasimha Rao.
The state minister, Mr Ponnala Lakshmaiah, has interests in the poultry business and his Tirumala Hatcheries has a considerable share in the sector.
Mr Adala Prabhakar Reddy’s APR Associates has been active in the engineering and construction space for long.
