‘As rivals joked, I met the poor’

Nizamabad, April 11: Making an oblique reference to Opposition leaders who ridiculed him for visiting poor families across India, the AICC general secretary, Mr Rahul Gandhi, said that while the rival politicians were making jokes about him “in air-conditioned rooms,” he was visiting the poorest of the poor to get first-hand knowledge of the problems faced by them. Mr Gandhi said this while addressing a public meeting at the Birkur mandal headquarter of the Banswada Assembly constituency on Saturday.

“To find out about the real problems faced by the poor, I visited their homes and had lunch with them,” he said.

Mr Gandhi said he would continue to strive hard for poverty eradication till his last breath unmindful of criticism. The Congress’ star campaigner pointed out that integrated development is be possible, only when poverty is eradicated.

Mr Gandhi praised the state government for its implementation of the Rajiv Arogyasri scheme, Indiramma project and the Jalayagnam programmes. He said other states are following Andhra Pradesh’s footsteps.
