Hyderabad, April 2: The large number of Independents and rebels in certain constituencies has perplexed the Election Commission since each electronic voting machine can accommodate only 16 names.
After the withdrawal of nominations on Thursday, it was found that more than 16 candidates were in fray in 17 Assembly segments and four Lok Sabha constituencies.
All these constituencies having thousands of polling booths now need to be provided with additional EVMs to accommodate the names of all the candidates.
There are 60,000 polling booths in the state and the election authorities had made arrangements for supply of 1.20 lakh EVMs
All of them were meant for the phase-I elections on April 16 when 154 Assembly segments and 22 Lok Sabha constituencies will go to the polls.
In Hyderabad district alone, there are more than 16 candidates in the fray in Assembly segments such as Musheerabad, Nampally, Goshamahal and Secunderabad. The number exceeds 23 each for the Parliament seats of Hyderabad and Secunderabad.
“We have informed the election authorities that Hyderabad district requires an additional 4,000 EVMs apart from the 7,200 EVMs which have already been provided,” said the district election officer, Mr M.T. Krishna Babu. Besides the candidates from main political parties such as the Congress, the BJP, the BSP, the Praja Rajyam, the TD, the TRS and the MIM, there are contestants from the Ambedkar National Congress, Ajeya Bharat Party, Lok Satta Party, Muslim League, Praja Bharath Pa-rty, Pyramid Party of India, Samatha Party, United Women Front, Trilinga Praja Pragathi Party and m-any independent candidates.
