Slums to sway votes in city

Hyderabad, April 10: The fate of the new Jubilee Hills Assembly constituency will be decided by the slum dwellers and the minorities.

Created out of Khairata-bad segment, this constitue-ncy is made up of Borabanda, Yousufguda, Yellareddyguda, Rahmathnagar, Habeeb Fathima Nagar, Sultan Nagar, Shankarlal Nagar, Erragadda, Jawahar Nagar, Vengalrao Nagar, Maruti Nagar, Shaikpet, Venkatgiri, Toli Chowki AG, Nagarjuna, Srinagar and Kamalapuri Colonies and parts of Jubilee Hills. Of the total 2.46 lakh voters, BCs constitute over a lakh followed by 83,000 minorities.

There are 13 contestants in this constituency, prominent being P. Vishnuvardhan Reddy (Congress), Muhammad Saleem (TD), Syed Humayun (PR) and C. Bala Prakash (BJP).

Slum dwellers of Addag-utta, Asia’s biggest slum, meanwhile, have numbers to tilt the balance in favour of the candidate they choose in the Secunderabad Assembly constituency.

A majority of the voters here changed their loyalty and voted for TRS’ T. Padma Rao in 2004, who defeated Talasani Srinivas Yadav. In 2008 bypoll, Mr Talasani defeated Mr Rao due to the support of Adda-gutta electorate.

This segment has close to 50,000 Muslim and Christian voters, which prompted the Congress to field Jayasudha, a Christian, from here. There are also sizeable number of voters from the Mudiraj community and other BC sub castes.

There are a large number of railway employees too in this constituency.

Though there are 18 candidates in the fray, the real contest would be between Mr Talasani and Jayasudha.

A former aide of Mr Talasani, Mr M. Sarangapani, is also contesting the seat on a Praja Rajyam ticket.
