Hyderabad, April 10: Voters of Secunderabad parliamentary constituency claim, not too jocularly, that the candidate they elect would belong to the party that forms the government at the Centre.
In 2004, Mr Anjan Kumar Yadav of the Congress won from here and his party formed the government. The previous two elections saw the BJP leader, Mr Bandaru Dattatreya, emerging victorious.
But the situation is different this time with 23 candidates testing their luck, including 15 from various parties and eight independents.
The seat, marked for its cosmopolitan culture, has nearly 15 lakh voters and seven Assembly segments. But nearly one-third of the voters live in slums and will play a crucial role in deciding the fate of the candidates.
Mr Yadav and Mr Dattatreya are in fray even this time. The TRS and the TD have also put up candidates though they belong to the same alliance.
But political equations have changed a lot since 2004. Also, the delimitation exercise has added the Amberpet, Jubilee Hills and Nampally segments to the constituency along with Musheerabad, Khairatabad, Sanathnagar, and Secunderabad.
At the same time, Himayathnagar, Asifnagar and Maharajgunj segments have disappeared.
Besides Mr Yadav and Mr Dattatreya, others in the fray include Mr Srinivasa Sudhish Rambhotla (TD), Mr Mahmood Ali (TRS), Dr Dasoju Sravan Kumar (Praja Rajyam), Mr C.V.L. Narasimha Rao (Lok Satta), Mr M. Venkatesh (BSP), Mr Indad Jah (Ambedkar National Congress), Mr Mohammed Osman Qureshee (Ajeya Bharat Party), Mr Abdus Sattar Mujahed (Muslim League), Mr Lellapalli Aseervadam (Praja Bharat Party), Mr P. Damodar Reddy (Pyramid Party of India), Dr Polyshetty Ram Mohan (Samatha Party), Shiraz Khan
(United Women Front) and Mr S. Devaiah (Trilinga Praja Pragathi Party), besides eight independents.
