Giving strength to this argument is the party’s “Praja Rail Yatra”, which covers only two of the 10 districts in the Telangana region (Warangal and Khammam).
At the same time, PR chief Chiranjeevi’s political rivals, the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, and the Telugu Desam chief, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, are undertaking vigorous poll campaigns in the Telangana area.
In private, the PR leaders accept that their prospects in Telangana are not too good. They feel that the PR may win just about 15 to 20 seats there. In fact, the party camp managers are not even sure of the prospects of the PR vice-president, Mr T. Devender Goud. The PR leaders are not even in a position to identify the Lok Sabha seats, which they are sure of winning.
The PR leadership is now pinning its hopes only on constituencies form which it has fielded the turncoats, like Nirmal (former TD leader, Mr A. Maheswar Reddy), Bellampally (ex-TD MLA, Ms Sridevi) and Mudhole (former Congress leader, Mr G. Vittal Reddy).
However, Mr Devender Goud exuded confidence. He said that the PR would surprise all the political pundits by faring well in the polls.
Ironically, among the Andhra, Nizam (Telangana) and Ceeded (Rayalaseema) regions, Nizam was the most preferable region for Chiranjeevi in terms of the performance of his films. Chiranjeevi’s films used to draw huge crowds in the Telangana region, when compared to Andhra and Rayalaseema. However, the region may not prove to be that lucky for the actor-turned-politician when it comes to politics.
