Hyderabad, April 2: Several rebel candidates stayed in the fray from all political parties when the time to withdraw nominations nominations on Thursday, refusing to be swayed by the carrots held out to them.
The situation was the worst for the Praja Rajyam. It was not clear just who was a rebel and who was the official candidate.
According to one estimate, there are 102 rebels for the first phase. Adilabad and Medak districts have 14 PR rebels each.
Many Telugu Desam candidates failed to withdraw from the seats allotted to the TRS, ignoring the order of the party president, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, to pullout out. CPI(M) candidates are in the race from Wara-ngal East, Station Ghanpur and Assembly segments.
The former Hyderabad mayor, Mr Teegala Krishna Reddy, who filed his nomination papers from the TRS seat of Maheshwaram, has gone underground. Both parties are in the fray in Warangal LS and Secunde-rabad, Peddapally, Mahes-hwaram, Patancheru, Sangareddy, Sathupally, Suryapet, Makthal, Sircilla Assembly seats.
Mr Dayakar Reddy, a TD candidate who had to withdraw from the race, was arrested in an unrelated case and could not withdraw his papers. The TRS’ Mr Laxm-ikantha Rao did not withdraw from contest in Husn-abad, allotted to the CPI.
The Congress has 14 rebel candidates, dissidents from Ramagundam, Station Ghanpur and Vardanpet withdrew after they spoke to the Chief Minister Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy.
But the sitting MLA, Mr J. Venkata Rao, refused to budge from Khammam. The Khammam ZP chairman, Mr Chanda Lingaiah, and his wife, Ms Bharati, are fighting official candidates in the Lok Sabha and Assembly polls.
Rebel Congressmen refused to yield in Korutla, Asifabad, Khanapur, Nakirekal, Wyra, Serilingampally, Pargi, Balconda, Ichapuram, Pendurti and Madugula constituencies. “Most of them are not powerful enough to defeat the official candidate,” a senior leader said.
