TD T leaders worry about alliances

Hyderabad, Dec. 9: The Telugu Desam leaders, particularly those from the Telangana region, are in a catch 22 situation. While they are jubilant over the party’s alliance with the CPI, CPI(M) and with a likely alliance with the TRS, they are worried that they may have to sacrifice their seats.

The Telugu Desam leaders in the Telangana region will be the worst hit since the Left parties and the TRS have a strong presence in the region and they will demand their due share of seats. Out of the 119 seats in the Telangana region, TD leaders expect the party to give them as many as 80 seats under the alliances quota.

The TRS will demand a little over 50 seats while the CPI(M) and the CPI may demand a minimum of 30 seats, TD sources disclosed. “TD will certainly have to give away sizeable number of seats to its allies. The demand will be high. It would disappoint a large number of Telugu Desam leaders,” a senior Telugu Desam leader told this correspondent.

CPI leader Mr Narayana is demanding 55 seats as their quota while CPI(M) may demand 25. “TD leaders need not be worried. Everyone knows their strengths and weaknesses,” a TD leader said. The TRS contested 54 seats in 2004 elections in the alliance with the Congress but won only 26. The party was decimated during the last four years.

A senior TD leader said the party chief should not yield to the TRS demands. TD sources said the Left were demanding more seats in Khammam and Nalgonda districts, which could disappoint local TD leaders very badly. TRS is out to seek more seats in Karimnagar, Adilabad, Nizamabad, Adilabad, Warangal and Medak. The party president, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, has been non-committal so far on the alliance with TRS.
