Hyderabad Nov. 20: The charm for police jobs among youth is waning as other lucrative fields like IT, retail and service sectors have emerged which offer better emolument. Particularly in Hyderabad, the trend in Hyderabad is downwards and is perceptible during recruitment drives. Better pay packages, flexible timings, opportunities to grow are some of the reasons that make this generation explore other jobs. The additional director general of police (law and order) Mr A.K. Khan agreed that the craze for police constable job has fainted. However, he said the trend is visible in all departments.
“We are not getting as many applications for the constable posts as we used to get earlier,” Mr Khan said, “even for sub inspector posts response was dull,” he added.
He attributed the reason partially to overall boom in economy that created many jobs in in the city. “We are in the process of improving the status of a constable. Now constable is equivalent to a junior assistant in other departments. The minimum qualification is also raised to Intermediate,” Mr Khan said.
The department invited candidates for 3490 posts last time. They received only ten thousand applications and finally after the written test only 2998 candidates were selected. This time notification has been issued to fill up 2967 vacancies. According to Mr Khan, the department used to get applications nearly 10 times more than the available jobs in the earlier notifications.
Mr Harish Gupta, Joint commissioner (administration) said, the department took up encouraging youth taking up police jobs. The administration started conducting coaching classes for the youth. “This way we want to encourage youth to come into the police force. Our last coaching classes were successful. More than 200 candidates selected for the posts,” Mr Gupta said. “This time also we will conduct coaching classes,” he added.
