Hyderabad Dec. 1: Despite a series of terror attacks in the country, security measures and checks at most railway stations in the twin cities are lax. Except at major railway stations such as Secunderabad, Hyderabad and Kacheguda stations, none of the other stations have video cameras or metal detectors. Even the Secunderabad and Hyderabad stations have only a few cameras installed. For instance, there is only one camera in the entire reservation complex in Secunderabad. There was a proposal to install CCTV cameras in parking lots too. But, that has not seen the light of the day yet.
More than two lakh passengers use the city trains including the MMTS to commute daily.
According to the additional director-general of the state railway police, Mr M. Alagar, it is the responsibility of the Railways to install security equipment. “We advised the railway authorities to install baggage scanning machines in cloak rooms. Unclaimed baggage can at least be found by the public. However, luggage left at cloak rooms can never be detected. So it is essential to check luggage before it is kept in the cloak room,” Mr Alagar said.
“Railways, which is reaping profits, should set aside some amount to improve the security measures at railway stations,” said Mr Bidhayak Das, a regular commuter. The divisional railway manager of Secunderabad, Mr A.K. Pavadia, said that their team reviews security arrangements at all important railway stations at regular intervals. “We are going to revamp security arrangements at all major railway stations in the state,” Mr Pavadia said. “Installation of baggage scanning machines is also under consideration,” he added.
