Hyderabad Nov. 30: After the Mumbai terror attack, the Congress leaders in the state want the Army to take military action in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK). Worried about the image of the party after the incident, the state Congress leaders are trying to prevail upon the Central leadership to attack Pakistan. There is a general consensus among the Congress leaders that the incident sent wrong signals to the entire nation. Ministers in the state and MLAs are busy recommending war on terrorism like like the one the US launched after the 9/11 attack. While some leaders are strongly recommending a full fledged war, some are suggesting military action to eliminate terrorist camps in the Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) immediately.
Many of the Congress leaders are not sure about their future if the present situation continued. “The first impact will be seen on the five states which went to elections. While we were sure that we would win in New Delhi three days ago, it has now turned into a tough election according to exit polls. It is obvious that the Mumbai incident has affected the party image,” a senior Cabinet minister said.
While some of the leaders tried to convey this to the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, most of them are waiting for the Winter Session of the Assembly to start on Monday to have one-to-one meeting with their leader to share their apprehensions.
The Congress legislature party is meeting on Tuesday evening and several MLAs are getting ready to tell the party leaders to examine the proposal to take military action on terrorist camps across the border.
“We don’t want to see the BJP to gain from this attack. After the incident, we found that patriotic feelings have been awakened. We cannot afford another post-Kargil swing,” said a senior legislator of the party.
Though the resignation of Shivraj Patil has been welcomed by the party leaders, they insist on a serious attempt to rejuvenate the party image. They also made it clear that a decision on this should be taken immediately so that a military action could be justified in diplomatic circles. Some of them are trying to prevail upon the Chief Minister to expedite investigations into attacks that took place in the city.
