Abattoir project is non-starter

Hyderabad, Dec. 7: Two years after the announcement, the Rs 50 crore project to modernise and construct eco-friendly slaughter houses in the city, is yet to take off. This has resulted in the rise of illegal slaughter of goat and sheep. As per the rules, only healthy animals should be slaughtered. GHMC veterinary doctors have to certify the animal.

However, butchers are slaughtering animals of their choice. Moreover, there are no veterinary doctors at the four slaughter houses in the city which are officially closed. Veterinary doctors are available only at the new abattoir at Chengicherla. About 60 per cent of the requirement of city is being met by the illegal slaughtering prevalent at the four abattoirs in city and the remaining from the Chengicherla unit.

The GHMC officials defended themselves stating that over 9,000 cases have been booked and Rs 16 lakh fine has been collected in two years. “The Chengicherla abattoir is located 20 kms from the city. None of the butchers and retailers are willing to travel that distance every day,” said a member of the Butchers Welfare Association. According to a senior official in the veterinary section, strict guidelines from the Union food ministry are the main reasons for the project remaining on paper.
