PR mulls pact with the BJP

BY J.R.PRASAD

Hyderabad Nov. 30: The Mumbai terror attack appears to have changed the mind of some Praja Rajyam leaders over a pre-poll alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party. Some PR leaders are of the view that the incident and developments later on like the resignation of Mr Shivraj Patil as the Union home minister would benefit the BJP in the coming elections. A section of leaders including Chiranjeevi’s brother-in-law, Mr Allu Aravind, are believed to be pressurising the party chief for an alliance with the BJP.

In the wake of the Left parties deciding firmly to align with the Telugu Desam in the coming polls, the PR leaders are now seriously weighing the pros and cons of going alone in the elections. Many leaders feel that a lone battle may not be a wise decision for the new party. “Pre-poll pact with the BJP will give us an edge in case of a triangular fight,” a PR leader said on condition of anonymity.

When asked about the PR’s chances of joining hands with the BJP, the PR spokesperson Mr Parakala Prabhakar ruled out the same. According to sources, even though the party is repeatedly denying a possible truck with the BJP, the Praja Rajyam camp managers are said to have decided to keep their options open on aligning with the BJP. Sources close to Chiranjeevi said that none other than Mr Aravind was in touch with the top brass of the BJP. It may be recalled here that BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Mr L.K. Advani called upon the PR to join hands with the BJP during his recent Vijay Sankalp Yatra in Hyderabad.
