Hyderabad, Dec. 10: It may sound absurd, but the Congress wants more parties to join the Telugu Desam-led combine and is also keen on Praja Rajyam chief Chiranjeevi restarting his tour.
According to an optimistic Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, both these developments would ultimately help the Congress. Dr Reddy pointed out to senior party leaders that the TD would have to give at least 100 seats to its allies and this would spell trouble for it.
The CPI and the CPI(M) have already submitted a list of seats from which they wanted to contest. Both parties are demanding 45 seats. Similarly the Telangana Rastra Samiti chief, Mr K. Chandrasekhar Rao, is looking for 51 Assembly and 12 Lok Sabha seats and others such as the CPI (ML) and the BSP are also gunning for more seats.
"The TD has to allocate at least 100 seats for its alliance partners, which would be a good opportunity for the Congress since we are confident of our chances in 90 seats", said Mr N. Manohar, Congress MLA and manifesto committee member. Dr Reddy also told Congress Legislature Party meeting that surveys conducted by the party revealed that the opportunistic moves being made by the opposition parties against him had angered the people. "This conglomeration of different parties would end up damaging each other" observed Dr Reddy.
Also, he believes that the more megastar Chiranjeevi tours the state, the better for the Congress. This was amply evident in the Srikakulam district, where Congress got more appreciation after Chiru’s road-show. The same happened in the Telangana districts.
"It may be due to the realisation of the people that the film star has nothing to offer them," said Mr N. Kirankumar Reddy, Chief Whip and senior Congress leader. "People are disillusioned with the Chiranjeevi myth."
