Warangal, Dec. 9: Rumour mills worked overtime in the city after police arrested a religious preacher suspecting him to be a terror operative. Police later said that the preacher, Mohammed Khaza Altaf Waheeduddin, 39, a native of Aurangabad in Maharashtra, did not have any terror links.
However, the electronic media overplayed the news of his arrest near MGM Hospital and this triggered rumours that more terrorists were prowling in the city. Police, after questioning Mr Waheeduddin at the Matwada police station, discovered that he had been staying at the Urs Dargah.
Sleuths searched his room and recovered three cell phones, six sim cards, and the pictures of former Pakistan president, General Pervez Musharraf and the Gujarat Chief Minister, Mr Narendra Modi.
The police also recovered some literature in Urdu and his voter ID card issued in Aurangabad . Sleuths then got in touch with the Aurangabad police, who confirmed that Mr Waheeduddin was a native of Bokkalguda area in the city and was a divorcee.
The Aurangabad police said that he had been preaching in various dargahs across the country for the past 10 years. Authorities at Urs Dargah also told the police that he had visited the place two years ago and added that there was nothing suspicious about him.
The Superintendent of Police, Mr V.C. Sajjannar, said police had verified the antecedents of Mr Waheeduddin and found no evidence of any links to militants. The SP stated that Mr Waheeduddin would be produced before a magistrate on Wednesday to be bound over.
