Hyderabad, Nov. 7: The Telugu Desam leadership has decided to launch a counter-attack on Ms D. Purandareswari, the daughter of N.T. Rama Rao, who earlier this week bitterly denounced the party chief, Mr N Chandrababu Naidu. In an open letter, Ms Purandareswari had raked up Mr Naidu’s coup on her father and cautioned her brothers, Harikrishna and Balakrishna, against the TD chief.
The attacks by Ms Purandareswari had become a cause of concern since Mr Naidu is banking on the Rama Rao family of actors to lead the party’s campaign. Any attack from a prominent member of the patriarch’s family would be additionally embarrassing. Also, it was a delicate matter to counter the daughter of N.T. Rama Rao in public.
Against this background, Mr Naidu plotted a counter-strategy with party seniors like Mr Yanamala Ramakrishnudu, Mr K. Srihari, Mr E. Dayakar Rao and Mr Ravula Chandrasekhar Reddy at NTR Bhavan on Friday. According to sources, the TD chief felt the Congress was trying to malign the principal Opposition party by using Ms Purandareswari as a "pawn".
It is learnt that Mr Naidu directed his colleagues to highlight the fact that Ms Purandareswari’s husband, Mr Daggubati Venkates-wara Rao, had also taken part in the 1995 coup.TD leaders will rake up issues like the attacks by Congress activists on the properties of N.T. Rama Rao after the assassination of Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and Vangaveeti Mohan Ranga.
The TD hopes to use these incidents to portray the Congress as a party using Ms Purandareswari and her husband to defame the TD. Soon after the meeting concluded, the TD legislator, Mr P. Kesav, actor-turned-politician Roja and the party spokesperson, Mr N. Rajakumari, launched a scathing attack on Ms Purandareswari. They charged her with casting aspersions on Mr Naidu only to please the Congress leadership.
