Chiru gets bad PR from graft, factions

BY J.R.PRASAD

Hyderabad, Sept. 12: Contrary to film star Chiranjeevi’s promise, his party has admitted an IAS official who is allegedly facing graft charges. The party recently admitted Mr T. Chandrasekhar, a 1987 batch IAS officer of the Maharashtra cadre, who is facing graft charges.

According to sources, Mr Chandrasekhar faces graft charges over the allotment of work to a private construction company when he was metropolitan commissioner in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority. The former IAS officer had also reportedly faced an inquiry by the Upa Lok Ayukta over irregularities in building bridges in Nagpur when he was Nagpur municipal commissioner, according to the former finance secretary, Mr D.C. Rosaiah, who recently quit the Praja Rajyam.

On the other hand, Mr Chandrasekhar was acclaimed as one of Maharashtra’s best officers and received accolades for his work as municipal commissioner of Thane and Nagpur. He is a recipient of the Prime Minister’s award for excellence in public administration.

The central office of the Praja Rajyam was reportedly built by a construction company in which Mr Chandrasekhar is said to have stakes. It is building another party office at Srinagar Colony here. When contacted the Praja Rajyam spokesperson, Mr Parakala Prabhakar, refuted the charges against Mr Chandrasekhar. The former babu on Friday stayed away from the media.

Meanwhile, Chiranjeevi witnessed the first case of “factionism” in his party when Mr N.H. Bhasker Reddy of Nandyal and his followers joined the party. Mr Bhuma Nagi Reddy, who is also from Nandyal, was invited to the dais, but Mr Bhasker Reddy was not. His followers immediately began shouting slogans against Mr Nagi Reddy.
