Hyderabad, Sept. 17: The number plates of vehicles in the twin cities are a riot of colours much to the irritation of traffic cops. Black on white, white on black, blue on white, red on black; all these combinations and more can be seen on number plates.
It is mostly youngsters who prefer such snazzy combinations. The traffic and transport departments have enforced strict rules regarding the colours that can be used on number plates. Vehicles other than autorickshaws have to carry the manufacturer’s code number on the number plate and the registration number must be imprinted in black. Times New Roman and Arial fonts are to be used.
Cases would be booked against motorists who violate this code and they would have to pay a fine of Rs 2,000. The traffic police has registered over 10,000 cases against motorists for having improper number plates which are against traffic norms. And the number of violators is growing by the day. Despite having 90 CCTV cameras and at least two traffic policemen at every signal point, motorists are managing to ride freely with all the fancy number plates. Some fancy number plates also have provocative messages which are strictly against the law.
Currently, traffic police are issuing e-challans to the violators. If it is not paid within 15 days, a chargesheet is filed in the court. The violators will be imprisoned if they fail to pay the fine within the given time limit. Images taken by the video squad would serve as photographic evidence for prosecution. "We are strictly implementing the rules regarding the use of number plates and action is being taken against the violaors," said the additional commissioner (traffic), Mr Surendra Babu.
