The hat-trick victory of Narendra Modi in Gujarat might have thrown the Congress leadership into an unhappy mood, but some Congress leaders from Telangana see it as a good sign for statehood issue.
The win indicates revival of the BJP and will compel the Congress to take a final decision on the Telangana issue, they reason.
“With his hat-trick win in Gujarat, Narendra Modi will soon stake his claim to become prime minister candidate from the party. Once that is accepted, the saffron party will get a new lease of life across the country. As already the BJP leadership has promised statehood to Telangana after coming to power, the people of the region are likely to embrace the BJP in the 2014 general elections which doesn’t augur well for the Congress,” says a senior Congress leader from Telangana.
When the BJP is out to gain a foothold in Telangana, the Congress cannot afford to continue its dillydallying on the T-issue, which would be suicidal, he adds.
“All these days our party leadership has been dodging the T-issue saying creation of a Telangana state would strengthen the BJP in the region. But, now the opposite is happening. If our leadership does not accord statehood to the region, then our party will be nowhere in the region and BJP along with the TRS will sweep the 2014 polls here,” opines a former MP from Telangana.
BJP feels stronger in Telangana
On the other hand, some BJP leaders feel that the TRS leadership could no longer ignore the saffron party, like it did during the Mahbubnagar bypoll. Party leaders say that TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao will henceforth adopt a guarded approach towards the saffron party as its chances of revival are much improved with Modi’s win.
According to their argument, the BJP will get preferential treatment even during the meetings of the steering committee of the Telangana Political Joint Action Committee (TJAC) hereafter.
