In spite of the setbacks it has received, the Congress will score a hat trick and retain power in the state in the 2014 elections, says newly-appointed Union minister of state for railways Kotla Jaya Suryaprakash Reddy.
In an exclusive interview with Express on Monday, he promises to utilise his new assignment to bring new railway projects to Andhra Pradesh which he says has been neglected by successive railway ministers. Here are excerpts from the interview.
Q: How do you see your new assignment?
A: It is a great opportunity for me to contribute to development of Andhra Pradesh as well as the country in railway sector. I am extremely delighted for being inducted into the Union Cabinet.
Q: Have you earned a berth in the Union cabinet for being neutral on state’s bifurcation issue or for being the son of a former chief minister?
A: Our party leadership has recognised my services to the party. Hence the reward. I will live up to the leadership’s expectations.
Q: Some leaders think that the high command has favoured you to counter Jagan’s influence. How far is it true?
A: No fledgling party can pose a threat to the age-old Congress. Despite all the setbacks it faced so far, the Congress will once again emerge as a winner in 2014.
Q: You met chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy today (Monday). What did you discuss with him?
A: I met him to discuss the pending railway projects in the state. Of the 39 projects sanctioned to the state, 29 are in progress and 10 are yet to commence.
Q: Can people of the state expect something more form you?
A: Definitely. I will favour my home state as my predecessors favoured theirs. Injustice has been meted out to the state. I will try to undo the injustice in the next railway budget.
Q: Will the backward Telangana and Rayalaseema get new projects?
A: I will treat all the three regions of the state with equal priority. I will strive hard to develop the railway network in the entire state.
